JEE/ NEET, THE WHOLE ENTRANCE FESTIVAL AND DUMMY SCHOOLS! Author - Gokul M Kumar Joint Entrance Exam and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, both are ranked among the world's toughest exams. Every year an average of 13 lakh students attend NEET and 12  lakh students attend JEE. Like Ganeshotsav and Holi, these entrance exams became one of the festivals of India, not only because of the population involved in it but also because of the economics involved in it. Allen ( one of the top Entrance coaching institutes in India) says on their website that they had given prices worth 1.5 crores in the year 2019 alone. For drawing a clear picture of the entrance economy we could simply check Allen’s fees, for the first year itself it cost around 120000. The economy is so huge therefore a lot of educational products and services are offered in this segment alone. Even a tablet program offered by Akash Byju alone costs around 75000. Introduction to National Education Policy - Curriculum and Pedagogy

Introduction to National Education Policy - Curriculum and Pedagogy

National Educational Policy

National Education policy 2020 is the first NEP in the 20th century, replacing the primary policy propounded by Indira Gandhi in 1986 and its amendment by Rajeev Gandhi in 1992. The main agenda of this article is to focus on restructuring the curriculum and pedagogy in schools part.

Adaptive learning
Restructuring the curriculum the (5+3+3+4 equation)

As we mentioned in the previous article. The whole schooling is divided into 4 ie,

1. Foundation     { age 6,7 and 3 years (Anganwadi)

2. Pre Primary class (Class 3 to 5)

3. Middle                  (Class 6 to 8)

4. Secondary             (Class 9 to +2)

So the structure of school education pedagogy and curriculum will be reconfigured in accordance with the 4 different stages we mentioned above. ie,

1.Foundation (2+3) - 5 years   ( age 3  to 8 )

2. Pre Primary class - 3 years   ( age 8   to 11 )

3. Middle class          -3 years   ( age 11 to 14 )

4. Secondary            -4 years    ( age 14 to 18 )

So the new school education pedagogical structure and curriculum framework will follow the 5+3+3+4 design.

The Foundational Stage: The five-year foundational stage consists of playful learning ie, activity-based learning with flexible timing. Studies show that a child's brain development happens before age 6. So the NEP plans to give importance to the age group that comes under ECCE.ie, 3-6. A kid who enters the first standard at the age of 6 should be school ready. So the foundation stage focus on the introduction part.

The Preparatory Stage:  the preparatory stage focuses on the induction part ie, like the foundation stage it comprises activity-based pedagogy, and it also consists of some light6 textbook and aspects of formal and interactive classroom learning which helps to lay the basics of subjects like maths science and languages and some aspects like reading writing and speaking.

The Middle Stage:  The middle stage act as the continuation of the preparatory stage where the pedagogy focuses on the introduction of subject teachers for discussion. ie - the subject science from the preparatory stage will become 3 different subjects in the middle stage ( Physics, Chemistry, Biology).   The middle stage comprises experiential learning of different stages and exploration of relationships between different subjects.

The Secondary Stage: After completing the middle stage students are inducted towards the final and most crucial stage of school education ie, the Secondary stage. This stage lasts for 4 years ( which also provides an option for students to exit after 10th grade and re-enter in the next phase to follow vocational courses or any other courses offered by the more specialized school for courses available in 11th and 12th grade ) consists of a subject-oriented pedagogical and curricular system which acts as a follow up of the Middle Stage, but with more attention to details, multidisciplinary study, critical thinking, more focused on to life aspirations, and greater flexibility were students can opt between subjects to follow.

The formerly discussed stages are purely concerned with curricular and pedagogical aspects which are designed to optimize School students learning based on the cognitive development of children. It will be informed to develop National and State curricula and teaching-learning strategies at each stage, but parallel changes to physical infrastructure will not be required.

In conclusion, the 2 stage school System is altered into a 4 stage system. The advantage is that the students will get time and resources to strengthen their basics and have the option and knowledge to choose what to follow next.
